After an inventory of our nursery stock and our registries, there are a few things we’re still lacking for Sophie’s arrival. We have about $100 in gift certificates to spend, but I’m not sure what we’ll really need out of our list of remaining items to purchase. So I’m enlisting the help of the moms and experienced aunts and “nini’s” in the blogger world!
Out of the following list, what should our top priorities be? As a note, I am planning to nurse. For how long – I’m not sure yet.
1. Breast pump
2. Newborn starter kit (bottles, nipples, storage bags)
3. Bath center (little bathtub for baby)
4. Sleep positioner
5. Baby health & grooming kit
6. Baby monitor
7. Diaper Genie
8. Wipe warmer
9. Glider/rocker and ottoman (this will probably just be an out-of-pocket expense).
Thanks for your help!

1. Invest in a very good pump, the cheap ones will only frustrate you. And it does pay for itself in the long run (compared to formula)
2. Worth it, but I wouldn't introduce bottles for a a few weeks if you are nursing.
3. I wanted one and then never used it, bathed my kids in the sink.
4. The one I had was not very useful.
5. Got most of the grooming stuff from the hospital in a kit they gave me...you might check to see if they do that where you are delivering.
6. never had one, guess it depends on how far the baby will be from you. My kids slept with us.
7. I bought diaper bags at the Dollar tree, they were scented and I could keep them in every room (and diaper bag), because believe me, you are not going to run into the nursery every time you need to change a diaper.
8. Everyone I know gave up using theirs. Again, you are not going to run to the nursery every time to change a diaper.
9. Glider/rocker....soooo worth it...especially if you are planning to nurse.
1. Because pumps are a love-hate relationship, a good one will get you through.
2. Yup, need these.
3. I was surprised at how little our tub lasted because once Ian could move more, by about 4 months, he didn't like the hump in the newborn tubs. So, we bought a little blow-up tub and we used that for a few months until Ian started moving even MORE and tried to climb out of it! So, now we're just in the big tub. All of that to say, it won't last very long, but it's convenient for the little ones, and they're relatively cheap.
4. Not really necessary.
5. Our hospital doesn't give you one. So far, we've used the nose sucker and nail clippers out of ours, but I guess we'll need more of the grooming stuff later.
6. Not really necessary... we use ours when something noisy is going on in the house and we want to shut Ian's door. But a lot of babies can sleep through things, and with her door open, you'll be able to hear.
7. We didn't buy one of these (a diaper champ, actually, that takes regular trash bags) until just recently when, uh, the poop got more interesting with starting solids.
8. This was nice in the beginning because Ian screamed through all his diaper changes. We still use ours. They're relatively cheap.
9. Almost as important as the crib!!
Here's my non-experienced opinion.
The breast pump should be your top priority because you will need it first. There will be one available to you in the hospital, but I've read it's handy when your milk comes in, which can happen after you're back home.
After that, the baby health and grooming--or at least a few key pieces (nail clippers)--you'll need right off the bat.
When I read everything else on the list, I thought, "Ooh, that's important, too!" But none of the rest is absolutely necessary. For peace of mind, the baby monitor would be next on the list, but Sophie might be in your room for the first little while, so not immediately necessary.
In my own list, I'm trying to get what will be immediately necessary, and hope family see that cute little baby and get us the rest! :)
